During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, Sandberg joined the resistance, forging identity papers and using his role as museum director to organize secret meetings. In 1943, he helped plan an attack on the Amsterdam civil registry but was betrayed and forced into hiding. Under the alias Henri Willem van der Bosch, he spent fifteen months concealed in Gennep, while his wife was imprisoned and his son held in a camp. During this time, he created the *Experimenta Typographica*: nineteen hand-made pamphlets filled with collages, quotes, and drawings, using whatever scarce materials he could find as a creative outlet during the war.
