About Us
Being part of the history of Amsterdam

In the heart of Amsterdam, where history whispers through cobblestone streets and the air is thick with tales of the past, lies a treasure trove of literary wonders. This is the story of Amsterdam Antiquarian Bookstore, a new chapter in a long-standing legacy. Once known as Antiquariaat Schuhmacher, this storied bookshop has been a beacon for book lovers and collectors for over seven decades.
The tale began in 1952 when Max Schuhmacher, a passionate bibliophile, opened the doors to his dream: a sanctuary for Dutch literature, spanning from the 17th century to the modern works of the 1960s. Just a year later, his sister Wilma Schuhmacher joined him, her dedication and love for books breathing life into the shop. Together, they cultivated an unparalleled collection of over 100,000 volumes, each book a portal to another time, place, and mind. Their shelves brimmed with rare and out-of-print books, significant collections of illegal publications, and private libraries from renowned authors and graphic designers.
Max's passing in 2007 marked a poignant moment, but Wilma carried the torch, ensuring that the rich tradition of meticulous research and curation continued. The detailed catalogues produced by Antiquariaat Schuhmacher became cherished references, sought after by collectors and scholars worldwide, a testament to the shop's commitment to preserving literary heritage.
Fast forward to the summer of 2024, the winds of change have breathed new life into this historic establishment. Reborn as Amsterdam Antiquarian Bookstore, our mission remains deeply rooted in the ethos of our origins while embracing the future. We aim to reach readers across the globe, offering the same unparalleled selection of rare books and literary treasures, but with a fresh perspective and a modern touch.
