Manuscript in what must be Pierron’s handwriting, in the first edition of the novel in loose-leaf form (352 pp.). It contains endless corrections, crossings-out, additions and so on.
Pierron (1872–1945) was a leading artist, writer and journalist of the Belgian fin de siècle. He was friends with the most important artists and writers of his time, such as Eugène Laermans and Victor Horta, Camille Lemonnier and Émile Verhaeren. In 1903, Horta designed Pierron’s villa in Ixelles. In the portrait painted of him by Frans van Holder (Royal Museum of Ghent) in 1909, we see a dignified, gallant dandy. Pierron has been immortalised in the history of queer literature through his relationship with the writer Georges Eekhoud and the intimate letters the latter wrote to him.
